Existential Songwriting: Being & Knowing Through Gestalt & Song
How is it that I create myself, in how I tell myself? And, when are words alone not enough?
Music, poetry and the lyrical act support an expression of self that moves beyond neurotic verbalizing, into a strengthened possibility to be truly known. When we feel intensely with a song, it is not only through words that we share ourselves, or feel understood in. The dynamic field of the song that the moment lives inside (arrangement, instrumentation, phenomenology and kinesthetic resonance) gives fullness to what is shared, and becomes real.
In this workshop, we will engage in a series of gestalt experiments that bring into being what has been unexpressed, or inexpressible through regular words. Through existential statements, sensation, movement, drawing, dyadic and group writing, gestalt theory, instruments, song sharing and reflection, we will use songwriting as a tool to speak aloud the self, and complete both the movement of how we reach to be known, and also how we can truly know each other.
No experience with instrumentation, music reading or composition is required to take this class. Your lived experience is the only experience needed.
